ooVoo Vs. Skype VOIP And Webcam

June 13th, 2008 by gfolley

OoVoo is a new VOIP, voice over internet protocol, and video conferencing software that allows you to talk computer to computer for free just like Skype software does.

What’s the difference? Skype has been around quite a while and started out just as an encrypted VOIP program and then added webcam service. Skype has the ability to do multiple audio conference calls but only two webcams can be used at once. OoVoo, on the other hand, allows you to do up to six webcams, three on the free version, for video conferencing. Both allow you to call regular phone lines when purchasing subscriptions; this is at a very low cost compared to regular phone service.

Oovoo is finally getting video conferencing back to what CU-SeeMe could do in the late 1990′s without needing server reflectors.

Skype is available on many platforms such as the Windows and the Apple OS (Operating System). OoVoo has an Apple beta version which is limited compared to what they offer for Windows, this will probably change in the future.

On Windows ooVoo is offering 3,000 minutes, for one month, of free direct to phone call out service when you download the free version. I’m betting this won’t last much longer but it definitely gives you a chance to kick the tires to see if this outbound calling service is right for you. Unlike Skype you can not get a regular phone number associated with the ooVoo VOIP service as it’s only one way, outbound.

Since they are both free there is nothing to lose to try both out.
