On January 14th at 1 PM a young 14 year old boy, Xia-Gang, was killed when his chair exploded while he was adjusting it. Steel bars about a quarter of an inch thick punctured his buttocks and anus damaging blood vessels. He bled to death at the hospital not long after.

The hospital, Jiaozhou Central, has had three similar events in the past month. None of those were fatal.

There was also an incident in November of last year that seriously injured an elderly man.

It has been theorized that the pressure vessel of the pneumatic lift may have been contaminated with oxygen and that friction may have sparked an explosion.
