Watch the second video first if you want a short answer. – gfolley 1-28-2010

This is a tutorial on using instancing and referencing. There are three forms of copying: copy, instance, and reference.

what a horrible tutorial. couldn’t he sum it up with a simple algorithm in 3 sentences?

    gosh.

Four-and-a-half minutes to explains the differences? Really?

Copy – creates a stand-alone copy of an object; changes to the copy and its modifiers do not affect the original object.

Instance – creates a mirror of the original object; changes to the instance and its modifiers affect the original object and all other instances, and vice versa.

Reference – creates an object based on the original; changes to the original will affect all its references, but changes to a reference will *not* affect the original or any other references.

Hey Tom, you are one of the many that don’t like Cresshead’s video but that’s why I created the 26 second video that follows it. It seems that you may have watched my video because you vaguely reiterated it in your comment. FYI, an instance, strictly speaking, is not a mirror of an object unless you use the mirror command.

I’m not going to rag on the guy with the 4.5 min vid, but I have to say, ALL tutorials IN THE WORLD should be as concise as the 26 second one shown on the bottom.
